During the period of the Cold War, two movements for equality broke out in the United States, including the Civil Rights Movement for African Americans and the Feminist movement for women. Due to the government being under pressure due to both these movements and the Cold War, the United States government gave both movements what they were asking for, the feminist movement getting the right to vote, and the civil rights movement getting non segregated schools.
Objective: Compare Soviet and US society as it deals with women's roles and civil rights
Analysis: Women went out to work during WWII and during the Cold War due to men not being able to work and provide for the family. During WWII, women felt a sense of accomplishment and mission while during the Cold War, women felt shame and guilt because of not being home. This difference may be present due to the differing social perspectives and propaganda of the different time periods. During WWII, there was much propaganda that portrayed women as a part of the war and that their work is needed for the country. During the Cold War, however, there was much propaganda regarding how women are essential to the country if they are staying home and keeping the family together.
